The Golden Temple of Amritsar

The world famous Golden Temple, Harmandir Sahib in which is enshrined the Holy Book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib, is the centre of a 400-year-old pool in Amritsar. Next to the Golden Temple is the Akal Takht or the Immortal Throne which was established by Guru Har Gobind Singh in the early 17th century. This is the supreme seat of Sikh temporal authority. Another edifice is a 9-storey tower built in the memory of Baba Atal Rai, decorated with frescoes depicting die life of die founder of Sikhism - Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Not far off is Durgiana Mandir, a Hindu Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga. Jalianwala Bagh is a pilgrim place for every Indian, as it symbolizes India's struggle for freedom. On die outskirts of Amritsar is Hill-ke-Pattan, a picnic spot (Bird Sanctuary) where rivers Beas and Sudej meet. Thirty kilometres south-east of Amritsar is Goindwal Sahib, which has a fine Gurudwara and Smadh of Guru Angad Dev, the second Sikh Guru. Twenty .kilometres south-east of Amritsar is Taran Taran which has a Gurudwara in Mughal architecture with a Tomb covered with copper. About 10 km from city is Ram Tirath, a site where Maharishi Balmiki had his Ashram and where Mother Sita gave birth to Luv and Kush. The Horse of Ashvmedha Yagya organised by Lord Rama, was caught here. About 45 km from Amritsar is Baba
Bakala, dedicated to Guru Teg Bahadur, where a magnificent gurudwara stands. About 54 km to the east is Dera Beas of Baba Jaimal Singh Radha Swami sect. The colony is presided over by a living Master who propogates the teachings of the saints as understood by the followers of the Radha Swami faith. The Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims who come from all parts of the world are followers of this faith.
